2007 Mobile WiMAX State-of-the-Market Report
by Steven Taylor and Joanie Wexler, Kubernan
Recorded March, 2007; Paper posted June, 07
Abstract:
For the purposes of this study, WiMAX (Worldwide interoperability for Microwave Access) is an exciting and unique technology that delivers high-speed, broadband fixed and mobile services wirelessly to large areas with much less infrastructure than is needed today. WiMAX will not only deliver significant improvements in speed, throughput and capacity, but will also extend coverage far beyond what is possible with today's WLAN solutions. Mobile WiMAX is based on the IEEE 802.16-2005 standard (previously known as 802.16e). This is the latest revision and supports both fixed and mobile applications with improved performance and capacity while adding full mobility. It also includes inherent security and quality-of-service capabilities.
The PnPcast™ (Podcast and PDF) features a briefing moderated by Steven Taylor and joined by noted Wireless Analyst Joanie Wexler and Regina Moldovan, who will discuss the results of the Kubernan 2007 Mobile WiMAX State-of-the-Market Report.
Data for the report was collected in January of 2006, using the Webtorials community as the primary survey base. The respondents were, for all practical purposes, an equal mix of end-users and service providers. This resulted in some stark contrasts between end-user and service provider perspectives in some cases.
Summary findings include:
WiMAX to kick off as fixed-line data replacement this year; full mobility services pegged for 2008 |
|
Primary drivers: VoIP, followed equally by Internet browsing, email and business application use |
|
Inhibitors: High-cost devices expected; service availability constraints, spectrum scarcity |
